Stud Poker GamesThe name 'Stud poker' refers to any number of poker games where players are dealt a number of face-down cards. These cards (hole-cards) are only seen by the player to whom they were dealt. The rest of the player's cards are dealt face-up and are visible to all other players. In most variations of Stud Poker, the players are initially dealt their face-down cards. Next, the remaining cards are dealt face-up. Between each face-up deal there will be a round of betting. Often the final card is dealt face-down The opening bet comes from the player showing the best face-up hand at the time. (i.e. if the face-up hands at the table are QQ, J5, 86, then the player with the pair of queens would open the betting round.) The best hand will of course vary depending on the stud poker variant being played. Poker games in which the opening bettor is chosen from the hands, are called non-positional games Five-Card Stud and Seven-Card Stud are the most popular of Stud Poker games. Together, these two poker games are the source of almost every current stud poker variation. Five-card stud poker made its debut, and achieved great popularity during the course of American Civil War. More recently, the seven-card stud poker variation has become the stud-poker game of the masses, being played widely in casinos and in home games. The betting rounds in most stud poker games are generally named after the number of cards that the players hold at the start of the betting round. (i.e. Second Street is the name given to the round of betting that occurs when each player has two cards). In general the the final round is called 'The River', regardless of the number of betting rounds in the game. Seven-Card Stud typically begins with two cards being dealt face-down. The next four cards are dealt face-up, one at a time interspersed by rounds of betting. The seventh (final) card is dealt face-down and a final round of betting takes place. In any seven card poker game, players make the best five-card poker hand from their seven cards. Seven-card stud poker is an interesting game and can result in many a pot being won through bluffs. Once all cards have been dealt, four cards from each hand are visible to all players. It's easy to see how close the others are to making their hands, and easy to bluff (with a large bet) that the card you have in-the-hole is the 8 that will complete your 6-7-9-10 straight. Five-Card Stud typically begins with one card being dealt face-down before the first betting round. The game proceeds with a betting round followed by a card deal until the remaining 4 cards have been dealt face-up.
